[K12OSN] gray screen with X mouse cursor

This keeps coming up, I know, how how do you fix it and they is it 
continuing to be an issue. . .

Seems it could be fixed ahead of time. . .

Terminal boots but get just the gray X screen with the mouse pointer.

What to do?
