Did you ever resolve this?  The only thing I can think of is that
he sets up the autofs server to mount home directories from
a different server on demand.  As soon as you access something
under /home it tries to nfs mount the matching user directory
there.  If you followed the instructions about auto.master and
auto.home but don't have a matching NFS-exported /home something
strange would probably happen.
