[K12OSN] Having telnet come up automatically during bootup

Fulton, Wayne fulton at manorisd.net
Wed Jun 30 18:27:27 UTC 2004

We are running terminals to a unix time clock system using old machines and
linux. The terminals telnet into a server running the time clock system. Is
there a way to have that terminal telnet automatically into the time clock
server after the end user logs onto the local machine? (Ie. Script, etc.) We
want to avoid our end users having to telnet manually into the server.
Thanks for any help.

Yesterday I had a problem. I was in a meeting in a different part of my
school. A problem occurred that if I could have loged in from the nearest
computer I could have fixed in about 2 minutes. All I had was a Windows
machine available. How can I log in as root using a windows machine on an
internal network in other words the ip address is xx.xx.x.xx Thanks Pat

I keep a copy on a USB key so I can always have it with me.

The LANG="POSIX" setting was the problem I was able to run the Perl install
for the Unicode. Now I have another problem when I start ldap I get the
following error when I try to start ldap.
/usr/local/libexec/slapd: error while loading shared libraries:
libdb-4.2.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I believe the problem is symbolic link, but I not sure where to make the
link. Any input on this would be appreciated.

Thanks
-Glenn

On a wbel box I ran into the same thing.

The following is from:

"If you edit /etc/sysconfig/i18n, you can change the first line to say
LANG="POSIX"
and the change will take effect system-wide, the next time programs are
restarted. A reboot may be the simplest way to make sure you got them all."

I'm running an in-house application instead of k12ltsp, but I've got several
dual-xeon boxes with an RH9 base and kernel 2.4.20-19.9bigmem #1 SMP with
300+ days of uptime now. I haven't seen any problems with the memory size.

I have seen items like this advertised in a lot of admin / geek magazines
like Sys Admin, Linux Journal, and the like. I imagine perusing one of those
would yield results. Also a google search for "remote power control"
returned what look to be a lot relevant results.

I keep running into these errors with all sorts of perl modules. It seems
to always be related to a bug with perl. Try to issue the command
# export LANG="en_US"
at the command line and then run the install again. This has fixed every
install problem I have had with perl so far. Not exactly sure why this
fixes it but I have found the suggestion in forums on a few Google searches.

I need to upgrade my Redhat 9 servers to LDAP, so I can configure samba BDCs
and off load some of the network authentication traffic off my samba PDC.
>From the instructions I have seen sure seems like it would be easier if I
would up grade to Fedora Core 2. The problem is I have some concerns on the
stability of Fedora Core. Anybody currently using Fedora Core in
production? I have ran Fedora core 1 and now 2 on my home PC with some
quirky problems which eventually get fixed, but in a production environment
that could cause some big headaches. Any Opinions?

Thanks

Currently we're running FC2 in a "pre-production" test server that has ended
up getting some pretty heavy use and is actually running a Jabber server for
internal office IM. At the moment it's also running Egroupware and Moodle
(as well as Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc). It's on an old PIII 650...and a Compaq
at that. :P But, it does run fine, and I haven't had any problems with FC2
since the install. It's only been up for 28 days though. We're planning on
using FC2 in a few full production boxes come this fall. So, I have some
faith in it. Of course, if my little pre-production server died this
afternoon I would cry all that much.

The only real problem I've had with FC2 was when I tried to do an upgrade
from FC1...I had a few issues with KDE on the box that I upgraded. But I've
since just wiped it and done a fresh FC2 install. Since then I haven't had
any problems. So, I'm not sure I'd upgrade a production box to FC2 at this
point, simply because I've had some trouble with the upgrade. However, I'd
certainly plan on phasing in FC2 over FC1 on any box where I could do a
fresh install. Hope this helps.
