Maybe I'm still misunderstanding what you need, but if its just to sync
users (uid/gid/passwd) between machines, you could try using yp (NIS)
rather than LDAP.  That would save you having to have users reenter
their passwds. It's a good bit easier to set up. I can give you a hand
if you're interested.
