The nicest way is to build a new machine for the upgrade.  Then you
can merge the users from the /etc/shadow, /etc/passwd, /etc/group, and
/etc/samba/smbpasswd files, rsync /home over, and still be
able to go back and pick though anything else you might have
missed.  2nd best is to be running backuppc which will automatically
have copies of everything that you can access with a browser. 3rd
best is to rsync each filesystem to a holding space somewhere
just before the change. Big IDE drives are cheap and good enough
to hold spare copies that you can get back quickly with an
"rsync -essh ..." and if you have a copy of everything you don't
have to worry about what you missed.
