Perhaps bad form to reply to own message, but ...

If you have the latest Mozilla 1.4 or later installed, you need the latest jre  as mentioned at http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/java.html

And then create a link as described on the Mozilla site. 

Just running the upgrade script in the Additional Software folder will not do it. Penalty paid for upgrading mozilla (to fix something else, no less).
