There is not that much difference in the way they work - which
is a good thing in that you can alternate between which you
use. Apt runs the actual rpm program for some jobs where yum
uses the library routines and yum will default to installing
new kernels while apt makes you do that separately. They both
use the rpm database and will have the same problem if it
is locked or corrupted.
