Hi Bert,

Take a look at your /var/log/XFree86.0.log for any error messages.

  su root
  tail -50 /var/log/XFree86.0.log | less

ought to do it. 

I ran into a situation just last Friday with the Bitstream-Vera typeface 
getting hosed after apt-get update and apt-get upgrade, so I just 
uninstalled the new bitstream-vera RPM and put the original one back on, 
and all was fine.  The symptom was that X11 kept trying to start and 
then dying, five times, and then quit, saying "sorry, too many failed 
times", and I got a CLI login prompt.  This was on K12LTSP 3.1.2.
