or once you are done and find out they are wrong edit /etc/modules.conf
disclaimer:  this used to work - I haven't tried it on rh9 or above

for example change
alias eth0 eepro100
alias eth1 3c59x

to
alias eth0 3c59x
alias eth1 eepro100
