Upgrading between major versions via yum or apt-get is not
supported. 

That said it is possible. But it is one of things where if
you have to ask you probably don't want to do it. Especially
with the 4.0 to 4.1 jump, just about *everything* has changed.
Much easier to let the installer figure it all out for you.
