Now this is interesting, because, by default, XFree86 uses VT #7 instead 
of 4.  Let's see if you actually have a VTY 4 running on your box.  At 
your command prompt, hit Ctrl-Alt-F2, Ctrl-Alt-F3, etc. all the way 
through Ctrl-Alt-F7.  You should see the "ttyx" part change numbers (e. 
g. tty1, tty2).  Assuming that you do see them, try actually logging in 
at each one of them.  Let us know how this goes.
