You've already articulated the major argument in favour of going with
K12LTSP: it works, out of the box. The district-level SuSE supported should
be willing to buy this, since it dramatically increases the probability of
a successful initial Linux deployment, and starts building in-house support
skills, etc. while leaving the door open for an even smoother introduction
of SuSE in other areas in the future. In other words, using SuSE at the
outset  increases project risk, but there's no reason not to use it in the
future.

I'd see a K12LTSP deployment as your "best of both worlds" solution.
