Just a small point here, but it's safer to type the command as:

rm -rf /tmp/*

otherwise it's too easy to THINK you've cd'd into /tmp, type the
command, and discover your whole partition is going away because you
actually typed it while in the / directory.  Call me over-cautious, but
typing the specific path is better.
