ACPI is an interesting area. Try adding "acpi=off" to the kernel command 
line in grub (either at boot or in /etc/grub.conf). That way, the 
hardware can use the older APM standard for power. Depending on the BIOS 
on the motherboard, that may be an issue. I know it is with some 
equipment I have.
