My expereince with this....recently I bought a bunch of Basic M$ Optical
mice (USB).....$9 apiece.  They come with the PS2 adapter as well.  In
some machines the USB didn't seem to work...so I used the PS/2 adapter and
they work fine.  This isn't a fix, but may simply save you some time.
