Peter,
Since you re-installed everything, this is probably not the answer, but if grasping at straws ...
Delete the file $HOME/[OO-Dir]/user/psprint/pspfontcache 
I have had problems ooo loading very slowly due to this with several users. Deleting the above file fixes it.
