The problem in general is that unix/Linux applications tend
to generate postscript, so printing to non-postscript printers
involves passing through ghostscript, consuming CPU to create
a bulky raster image, then often pushing the image through
an inefficient character device like a parallel or usb port.
Using a postscript-capable device with its own network
connection eliminates a lot of overhead on the server, but
it is more expensive.
