[K12OSN] send message to specific user(s) with xmessage?

though write is a console command so AFAK it should work in GNOME too,
now when i did this, got....

[bimal at server bimal]$ write sbrawat
write: sbrawat is not logged in

and it logs out!!

using gnome... on rh9

any suggestions??
