Frank,
I have successfully used a D-Link G-520 pci card with Fedora 4 using the
cvs version of Madwifi to drive the atheros chipset on the card. Works
just fine. I have a script that will download the latest cvs version,
compile and install it on your pc if it has a live Internet connection.
I can send you the script if interested. Failing that I could send you
a cdrom of the madwifi drivers for you to compile and install on your
isolated pc.
Check out the Seattle Wireless website for a table of compatible
wireless cards. Not all cards from the same manufacturer use the same
cards, so pay close attention to which card you are buying. For
example: D-Link G-510 is not Atheros based, while G-520 is. You will
want to use 802.11g cards if at all possible. The difference when
transferring large files is quite noticeable. For just internet access
802.11b usingn a Prism-based is more than adequate and the Prism drivers
are quite stable.
The latest Linux Journal has an article on using the ndiswrapper to run
wireless cards using their windows drivers. With it you can use just
about any card whether its chipset is supported by Linux or not. It is
written by Marcel Gagne so it is also entertaining to read.
Dan
