did you add lines to /etc/openldap/slapd.conf??

like
replica   host=ipofbdc:389
          suffix="dc=you,dc=yourdomain.com"
          binddn="cn=root,dc=you,dc=yourdomasin.dc=com"
          credentials=yourpw
          bindmethod=simple

you need lines in your bdc /etc/openldap.conf
updatedn   "cn=root,dc=you,dc=yourdomain.dc=com"
updateref  ldap://ipofyourpdc
