In another thread:
<begin snip>
Under KDE's Control Center, under "Sound & Multimedia", look for a
"Sound System" section. If this is enabled, you're probably running
"artsd", the aRts sound daemon. It's got ahold of the /dev/dsp device,
and applications are expected to talk to IT, instead of to the device
directly.

I use this at home, and it allows me to listen to music streams in Amarok
while at the same time having the new KDE text-to-speech system (ktts)
read web pages for me. :^)

If you can convince RealPlayer to talk to aRts instead of /dev/dsp
directly, that should work well.
<end snip>

I am interested to hear more about this -- has anyone else used this
program? We have a few copies of Kurzweil but it has to be installed on
a windows machine and it is not very accessible for students, and has
been difficult to train teachers to utilize it. (text to speech for kids
with learning disabilities). Does this text-to-speech system install
with k12ltsp?

I now have sound working with some programs and have been "collecting"
terminals with sound to put into the classrooms. I need to work on
installing RealPlayer 8 per the instructions in the RealPlayer 10
thread, but not until next week. I am really interested in this text to
speech as we have a lot of special needs students in our building.

Thanks,

Rita Gibson
