It doesn't work the other direction - that is a windows server won't
accept connections to a name other than its own, but at least xp
and win2k clients will connect to dns CNAMES pointing to a samba
server.   As someone else mentioned, adding it to "netbios aliases = "
should work anyway. In fact you may need both for a mix of clients. I
think XP prefers to use DNS for the name lookup.
