Hey,

I was asked to post how I got sound working here and I apologize I forgot
to respond!

Anyhow, here's my experience with sound. I prefer ESD over NASD. NASD
however is easier to use on FC2 because you don't have to make any changes
to the accounts and it works right off in ICEWM. However, NASD on my older
terminals keeps breaking up, plays slowly and pauses the flash animtion on
the terminal as the audio stops. Not impressive. I would guestimate that
NASD would work on terminals over 200 MHz. ESD however works flawlessly
for me on terminals as slow as 100 MHz.

Again, this is the experience here in hermon, and we use FC2, so I don't
know if this applies on the newest iteration of LTSP.

How I got ESD to work on the terminals:

Simple, just go to preferences, more preferences, and choose "Multimedia
Systems Selector."Select ESD and presuming you have a compatible sound
card, you can click on test and should hear a tone!

The basic games such as Gcompris, Tuxtype, Tuxpaint, etc.. will work in
this environment.

HOWEVER, Mozilla flash will not without the following commands:

ln -s /usr/lib/libesd.so.0 /usr/lib/libesd.so.1 (Mozilla looks for
libesd.so.0)

Then:

cd /tmp
mkdir .esd
cd .esd
touch socket
cd ..
chmod -R a+rwx .esd/

An EXCELLENT page to test this is at http://www.starfall.com
Just visit the site, choose the ABC, and see if audio works. This website
is a great place to use to demonstrate to teachers through k-3.

As for audio cards.. I have not been successfullin getting my SB
compatible sound card to operate. I did however find a card that will work:

http://xiertekusa.com/product.php?pid=132&xcSID=2aeee5a792f10a91d9fe7908bbe81f26

It costs only 9 bucks per card, but is hard to get since it's no longer
produced!

I'd like to ask the LSTP community is anyone can recommend a sound card
they know works right off without modication, like the one above. (I think
that sound blaster card is recognized as a Ensoniq card when the terminal
boots) If you know a good source to get a working sound card, I'd like to
order a bulk of the cards for the terminals in our elementary school!

Thank you all! Have a good day!
