Right - I wasn't specific enough.  No, there is no /etc/passwd entry
for the users in question.  I did check that, I just gave you the
explanation without the confirmation.  :)

Hmm.  Just now I tried the following with two test users, each of
which was created with the /bin/false shell:
1. grab slapcat output
2. change test user's shell from /bin/false to /bin/bash
3. grab slapcat output2
4. try to log in as test user
   - success with fcatt, failure with mmouse
5. change test user's password
6. grab slapcat output3
7. try to log in as test user
   - success with fcatt, failure with mmouse

Nothing obviously magic or unexpected happens between step #3 and step
#6, so I don't know why changing the user's password would enable the
login (and I don't know why it didn't fix mmouse).

Sounds like it might be time to abandon computer science (wherein I
establish hypotheses and perform experiments to prove or disprove
them) and embrace the reading of documentation...

BTW, if anybody wants to you can access my LTSP test system like this
for now:
ssh -p8887 root at mojo.yi.org
I make no guarantees whatsoever about uptime or whatever; you can just
log in and poke around if you wish.  Just be nice.  :)  If anybody
does anything nasty at all, this will go away even faster than it is
going to anyway...

The password is..."asdf".
