Still emailing cold from Hotmail, so forgive the lack of proper threaded
replies :-)

I have kind of solved my dist-upgrade problem. Well, actually I haven't
solved the Apt problem, but tried Yum instead and had success! It is nearly
through downloading all the packages to do the dist-upgrade without
appearing to misbehave like Apt did. Curiously, I since used Apt from the
CLI to install one new package and it did that flawlessly.

I would really like to have some idea why the dist-upgrade tried to remove
so many essential packages because I would much rather use Apt over Yum
anyday. IMHO Yum is a poor cousin to Apt, and I'm not just talking lack of
GUI - it just doesn't interact with the user anywhere near enough for my
liking, but then I guess it's just what you get used to.

Regards, Gavin.
