[K12OSN] Maildir question

Is anyone familiar enough with Maildir to know if it's possible to to 
either change the location of the Maildir folder (ie, so it's not in 
/home/username) or to change the name of the folder itself to .Maildir 
so that my users will stop erasing all their email and blaming me?

I'm concerned about IMAP compatibility, etc...
