My understanding (and I've done it a few times successfully), is that
you load Windows first (letting it take the whole hard drive as is
default).

Then when you load Linux, the installer can figure out to setup the boot
loader appropriately without any additional configuration necessary on
your part.

Considering the situation, you probably DO want to change it so that
Windows is the default OS.
