[K12OSN] Purge processes when users log out

I have noticed a function in K12LTSP in /etc/sysconfig/k12ltsp. I can
set purge_processes=yes

I thought that this would kill a users processes when he/she logs out.
It doesn't. When I do a "top" from time to time, soffice.bin and
firefox-bin often run for users who are not still logged in. 

Is there an extra hack that can be applied to remedy this? We use gdm
and icewm
