This brings up an interesting discussion that has come up in the
Slackware community. Pat Vokerding the developer of Slackware compiles
everything to work on a 486 but optimizes it for 686's. If I can
convey this properly he uses the -march=i486 and -mcpu=i686 compile
settings. So it runs on a 486 but also is optimized if you have a 686.
Best of both worlds. Slackware on old systems is fast. It uses simple
init scripts like BSD.
