"ifconfig -a" will show your interface statistics and you should
have 0 or very few errors/drops.  ethtool or mii-tool will show the
speed and duplex settings on your end.  If you have managed
switches there will be commands to get similar info from
them.  Sometimes you can tell the speed/duplex setting from
leds near the ports, even on unmanaged switches.   The first
thing to check is that both ends of the connections match
in duplex settings.  If that is right and there are errors
at either end the wiring is bad.  If you can't find anything
showing errors, you may have something massively overloaded,
like a 10Meg hub in the path between 100Meg switches.
