I think the missing piece here is that you want to automount the
user's home directory onto his workstation and you don't supply
the home directory the way NIS does since you expect the entire
/home to already be mounted on the k12ltsp server.  If there is some
standard ldap schema that supplies this you should be able to make
it work, or it might be possible to configure pam to do the right
thing as long as all homes are on the same server (nis doesn't
require that).  And, until you get the home dir mounted you can
do anything that needs per-user ssh keys.
