Attaboy!  Glad you got it working!  That's so cool!  Not now, but
ultimately something like Samba/LDAP would be a much easier way to go. 
you'd only have to maintain users and files on one machine.  It's a cinch
to set up too now that we have the smbldap installer.  You could run it on
the "master" server and simply export /home like you are doing now...you
lose nothing in performance as you are exporting /home already....the pain
you're having with authentication now is what will go away.  You simply
set up the master with all the user accounts and use "authconfig" to tell
the other servers to get their users from the master.  One set of
users...one home dir.  Maybe something you can try this summer?
