the cu works well as a serial terminal. I think I usually call it with cu -l /dev/ttyp0 to use the com1 port. To exit, ~. usually does it if I recall correctly.

minicom or telnet should work??
Of course ssh is better and secure. OTOH if you are looking to hyperterm
in to Linux box just enable telnet services.
