I believe they do local caching, specifically for labtop scenarios. This at least takes care of the file system. The question would be how to do the authentication.

Do you mean to mount home remotely, say from home over the internet? Not a bad idea if so, but most likely not feasable. The teachers use the laptops when no internet or network are available.

I am currently thinking a script on login/logoff that copies remote
account y to local account x and then runs the chown and chmod -R with
the correct permissions.  I know that you can set certain tasks to
execute on login, maybe I can setup a script that does this with all
commands preceeded with sudo?
