I've also seen cases where there was some sort of "half-hardware" RAID
that required software drivers (I can't remember the make/model of the
SCSI card).

I had to turn off "RAID" in the SCSI bios before the drives were
visible, despite the fact that the SCSI card was detected properly.

Probably not your problem, but something you may want to double-check.
