Doug: If I understand your needs properly, the following may work:

1. On the DHCP server: configure a range of addresses to be available for devices on your 10.40.x.x subnet.

2. On the router between the subnets: configure an ip helper address that will allow DHCP broadcasts from the 10.40.x.x subnet to traverse the router and be relayed to the 192.168.x.x subnet.

Some info on ip helper addresses (or use your favorite search engine to get more info):

Scenario:

Workstation connected to a private lan behind a DHCP server handing out
192.168.x.x numbers. Public side of that server is on a 10.40.x.x number
and the server I want the workstation to boot from is on the 10.40.x.x
LAN.

How can I make this happen?

Did I lose you?
