I wasn't particularly impressed by GIMPShop.  Yes, it addresses one or
two of the user-interface issues of the GIMP but certainly not all.
While it is theoretically possible to get into the source of GIMP and
"fix" all these issues, I'm personally not up to it.  Of course, with
Photoshop, only Adobe can do it so I'm not saying I don't appreciate the
open source model.  Just that for me, getting into the source code is
not going to be much help.  Also, I suspect that some of the changes I'd
like are going to be too deeply ingrained in how the software works.  To
really do it well, you might need to pretty much start over on some
things.  Now, if I thought I had the skills and I had nothing else to do
(hah!) then I might give it a shot.  But I don't and I don't.

I'm a strong advocate for Open Source and I'd dearly love to replace
Photoshop with something free and open.  I am just not convinced that
the GIMP will be that something.  At least, not for a while.
