Hello,

We were in exactly the same same situation you are in when our lab
started. It is in a Church/small private school and we currently have
12 computers running off the main server. The clients are all various
forms of Pentium I machines with anywhere from 16 to 64 MB ram.

The Server motherboard is an Asus P4P800 (specs at
http://www.asus.com/products/mb/socket478/p4p800-e_d/overview.htm,
pricing examples at
http://www.bizrate.com/buy/products__cat_id--419,keyword--p4p800.html)

The motherboard is excellent and we've had no problems with it at all.
We've got 2 GB Ram installed on it, as well as a Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz
processor.with hyperthreading on.

For the data we have 2 scsi hard drives running off a SCSI controller
(this was the most expensive part of the machine!) running as RAID 1
(mirrors). All the clients have gigabit cards as well as the server
but since the switch is 100 MBit (can't afford a gig switch)
everything is running at 100 MB/s

Even with that, I am able to run Gnome desktop and I didn't have to
tweak anything to make it work faster - it can handle the load of
everyone using openoffice or browsing or anything else.

I hope this helps.

Joseph
