[K12OSN] Ubuntu thoughts...

Steve:

In Fedora... I prefer DansGuardian to SquidGuard,
although Eric's squidGuard package DOES update it's
blacklists every night (which is a very cool feature).
I suppose I could make DG update it's blacklists from
the same sources as Eric is using... hmmm.

1. First must get a "yum" install of DG... there is a
nice webpage that explains this pretty well:
http://fedora.ivazquez.net/content/view/17/25/

2. The repos.d file may have to be altered slightly to
get it to actually connect properly to this repository
(can't remember the specifics, but it's NOT
difficult).

3. "yum install dansguardian"

4. Next, disable the newly created repository (because
I think it's preferrable to only do updates from the
K12 "official" repositories).

5. I like Webmin, so I will next get the DansGuardian
webmin module.

That's about it for Fedora Core... just remember that
if you're also running squidGuard, when you make
adjustments to DG or sG, you may still have to make
those same adjustments to the other app.

In Ubuntu...

1. I go to Applications > System Tools > Add/Remove
Programs.

2. Select "Advanced" (which takes you to Synaptic)

3. Settings > Repositories

4. Select "Add"

5. Select all the Components (4 boxes) in EACH of the
three pulldown choices "Hoary Hedgehog", "Security
Updates" and "Updates".

6. After Synaptic updates itself, find dansguardian
and install it.

7. Again, I like Webmin, so I will install it at this
point also.

8. The Debian/Ubuntu default webmin package is NOT to
my liking, so I will go into Webmin and do a manual
update from there (NOW it will operate like Webmin on
my FC boxes).

9. Don't forget to get the Dansguardian webmin module.

10. You may have to use Webmin to check if squid and
DansGuardian are set to start at bootup (and if
they're running now).
