Hi, I had a similar issue. I was trying to use Knoppix variants and it
was choking on LVM. I was/am more used to traditional drive mounts, and
haven't learned about Logical Volumes very well even yet. I was adding a
disk to backup /home directories, and ran into the same problems.

After the drive is recognized by bios correctly, I booted to Knoppix and
used QTParted to partition/format the new drive as one ext3 drive. I
then edited FC3's /etc/fstab to be something like (from memory, this is
not exact)

/dev/hdc1 /mnt/hdc1 ext3 auto,users,exec 0 0

The new drive is now available at /mnt/hdc1, and not (easily) accessible
by the normal users. Now, I can backup to /mnt/hdc1, using LVM's
designated /home and it takes care of the details. This is cool for a
directory, but would probably be inadequate to keep a whole drive
mirrored. To restore, I of course need a valid /home in place as
recognized by LVM.
