Earlier this week I used the directions here to install backuppc on Centos 4.3:

The directions are for FC3, but they work on Centos 4, (the only thing
I did different was use the most up to date versions of backuppc,
rpms, etc).

The site above also include directions for setting up rsync/ssh with
other Linux and Windows servers.
