install the drive in as a slave drive in another computer ....

I used this very successfully when a school principals laptop was 
reformated by Compaq when sent away for service. She had her entire 
Masters studies on that laptop without another copy anywhere.  I was 
able to recover ALL of it.  :-)))  You scan the harddrive, and then pay 
for quota depending on how much data you need to recover.  Highly 
recommended
