[K12OSN] Load average sky-high but why????????

IDE Hard drive? Possibly its not using DMA mode. I am not sure if hdparm 
is installed with k12ltsp, but in other distros you can do a hdparm -d 
/dev/hda to see if DMA mode is on. Please understand and read hdparm 
parms before using any other command. It is very advanced.
