These two commands appear to fix it:

    export GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`gconftool-2 --get-default-source`
    gconftool-2 --makefile-uninstall-rule /etc/gconf/schemas/mixer.schemas


I'll add this to the install & build RC2...
