I have a clue that would work fine.  Unfortunately I can't test
until next week.

Since this worked fine:
/usr/lib/openoffice.org2.0/program/swriter.bin -writer

But this didn't (and this is what the menu item has):
/bin/sh /usr/lib/openoffice.org2.0/program/swriter.bin -writer
