Some people at the Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, France have
modified NX so that you can use a java client and also made it a bit more
secure so that instead of using a widely distributed private key, you can
use SSO-CAS. The project homepage is at
http://univ-rx.u-strasbg.fr/applet-univrx/.

To try out the speed of the software yourself and see how fast you can
connect and use educational software from france, go to
http://www.libersciences.net/. You can get an account for free and play
around with it, some of the site and the language of the programs are in
French.

You can use the off-the-shelf version of NoMachines NX or FreeNX but the
library site should at least allow you to see what type of speed performance
you can get.
