It is available in the Mac version.  I don't believe it is a default component
however.  I think you need to do a custom install and choose to install the
equation editor component. 

I have a couple teachers here who use it and say that the OOo.org formulas and
a couple of other open source solutions I showed them don't hold a candle to
the word version.  I don't know enough about it to argue them or to find an
equivalant solution.
