Look at your /etc/exports file. If you have the default settings
it will restrict access to the internal subnet (2nd NIC). Also
be sure you aren't running a firewall on the external NIC.
showmount -e 10.40.12.3
from a machine on the same network as the client should show
that the exports are available.
