Connecting via VNC does not affect DHCP, TFTP, & NFS, the three key
services required to boot a terminal.

VNC itself has to be a red herring.

The only things I can think of is if xinetd or the firewall were
modified while trying to muck around with the VNC service. Any chance
you tried enabling/disabling services, changed the firewall, or do
anything else that required root privileges?

I saw in an earlier post you had a link to a screen capture. It appears
that the TFTP transfer partially completes before it hangs. Whenever
I've seen this, I've always traced it back to a bad cable or a bad switch.
