I'll defer to your linux wisdom. 

I prefaced my comment by saying I was desperate for a solution.  You can 
only take my word that I googled *for days* to no avail before posting 
my request for help.

 I will look at the setting you suggest and I thank you for your general 
troubleshooting advice and the specifics about my case.
